چکیده

This document describes the Satellite Transport Protocol (STP), an experimental transport protocol for use over IP-compatible networks that was developed under the University of California, Berkeley’s BARWAN research project. STP was originally developed for the BSDi Unix operating system and was subsequently ported to FreeBSD Unix, and is freely available at ftp://daedalus.cs.berkeley.edu/pub/stp/. STP was specifically designed to overcome the following three problems encountered with TCP over satellite links (particularly satellite links that are asymmetric in bandwidth). These problems persist even in state-of-the-art TCP implementations that have satellite-friendly options such as “SACK” and “window-scale”:

AeroTCP: A Splitting Transport Protocol for an IP-based Satellite Network Supporting Aeronautical Communications

The IP-based Broadband Aeronautical Satellite Network will provide numerous new applications and services for both airspace system operations and passenger communications. However, the performance of data communications protocols and applications over such systems is dramatically degraded, especially the Internet TCP/IP protocol suite. In this paper, we propose a new transport protocols for sat...

Network Architectures to Improve the Performance of the Transport Layer in Satellite Communications

The paper began proposing two possible frameworks where the different solutions to improve the performance of the transport layer over satellite channels may be classified: the Black Box (BB) approach and the Complete Knowledge (CK) approach. The former implies that only the end terminals may be modified; the rest of the network is considered non-accessible (i.e. a black box). The latter allows...

Satellite Transport Protocol (STP): An SSCOP-based Transport Protocol for Datagram Satellite Networks

We describe the adaptation of an ATM-based protocol, the Service Specific Connection Oriented Protocol (SSCOP), for use as a transport protocol in a datagram-based satellite data network. This protocol operates with high throughput and efficiency over links with a large bandwidth-delay product, including those with a high bit error or packet loss rate. We discuss the modifications to SSCOP nece...

Tcp Performance Evaluation over a Dvb-rcs Satellite-haps Integrated System

An integrated satellite-HAPS system is particularly suitable for supporting emergency communications. A key element for the efficient adoption of such systems is the enhancement of transport layer capability to support TCP-based applications. This paper proposes a detailed analysis of TCP performance over the target scenario, involving a DVB-RCS protocol stack for satellite air interface. I-PEP...

Transport Protocol and Resource Management for Satellite Networks: Framework of a Project

The paper describes the protocol definition within the framework of the Project "Transport Protocol and Resource Management for Mobile Satellite Networks", funded by the European Space Agency ESA) and carried out by an Italian group composed of Marconi Mobile, CNIT and Etnoteam. In more detail, the Project is aimed at designing, implementing and testing a protocol stack adapted to the specific ...
